Hello! My name’s Katie Millard and I’m wife, mummy to a toddler (where does time go??) and businesswoman.
We live in Oswestry, Shropshire with a menagerie of animals and assortment of Peppa pig toys of various shapes and sizes!!
Our story started in 2013 when we had our first baby. I’d had quite a difficult pregnancy and eventually had to have our baby early, delivered by c-section after I developed pre-eclampsia. Luckily the support of other new mums I’d met during our ante-natal classes, despite all of the usual new-mum worries and anxieties, I was ok, but realised how important these friendships were.
My husband and I also realised that our old ‘haunts’ were no longer accessible with a pram, or that breastfeeding in public could be very stressful.
I returned to my job after 5 months of maternity leave, but couldn’t shake the idea that a town-centre, family-focused café was needed for new families just finding their feet, the more I spoke to people the more committed I became.
I started to attend business start-up clinics and mentoring sessions (often with our baby in tow!) and successfully secured a business loan, and I began searching for my perfect premises in Oswestry.
I left my job in July 2014, and later that summer we had the Grand Opening for Baby Bird Café CIC (Community Interest Company).
Fitting everything I want to do in my diary is always my biggest challenge, but I enjoy the variety that running my own business brings, and the fact I’ve taken my favourite bits of every job I’ve ever had and crafted my own dream job, completely tailored to me.
I heard about Bizmums through a Business Start-up Bootcamp that I attended, and met Michelle, the Bizmums Founder, very early on in my businesses development – I found it really uplifting to feel that I wasn’t the only mum trying to start (and run!) my own business, and the child-friendly monthly group meetings were a godsend!
When the host who had been running the meetings decided to move on, I took over the role of Bizmums Host in Oswestry, and just adore hosting our local meeting. We do a members showcase and have a themed guest speaker- I know myself and the other Bizmums always leave the meeting buzzing with ideas, ‘to do’ lists, full of energy and knowing that they are not alone in their businesses!
I really love meeting newcomers to the Bizmums sisterhood, and we’re a friendly bunch, so look forward to meeting you soon at the Oswestry meeting.
